Funding criteria

FEF projects can address any aspect of financial capability, provided they target increased or changed use of financial services. Projects funded by FEF must be designed to include the assessment of their impact and the detailing of the lessons learnt. Particular consideration will be given to projects which have the potential for rapid scaling-up and replication in other countries.

The initial target countries are Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The maximum grant size is £ 250 000 a project to be spent over a maximum of 24 months.

Who can apply?

The fund will be open to:
  • Government agencies and regulators tasked with financial education;
  • Other public institutions with a financial inclusion mandate;
  • Foundations, non-government organisations and training institutions;
  • Private sector firms in their capacity as employers, providers of financial services, operators of networks such as mobile phone operators, or education providers;
  • Industry associations of financial services providers;
  • Mass media organisations or other organisations operating communication media; and
  • Any other organisation aiming to increase financial capability through financial education.

Organisations can apply individually or in consortia. All applicants must demonstrate some leveraging of their own resources. Private sector organisations need to provide matched funding.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • The necessary experience and capacity to implement the proposed project and appropriate knowledge of financial education issues;
  • How the project will increase financial capability;
  • The potential impact of the intervention, in terms of targeted behaviour change, increased financial capability and the potential for wider impact; and
  • Plans and resources for assessing the impact of project, including baseline data and outcomes. Guidelines for monitoring and evaluating the project will be supplied.
